The Ultimate Guide to Small Block Chevy AN Fuel Systems
Building a fuel system for your Chevy Small Block is one of the most critical parts of your project. Whether you're doing an EFI conversion or building a high-horsepower carbureted setup, a reliable, leak-proof AN plumbing system is the professional standard. This guide will walk you through the key decisions and components you need to build a bulletproof fuel system.
Step 1: Choose Your AN Hose Size (-6, -8, or -10 AN)
The first and most important decision is selecting the right size for your fuel lines. This choice depends entirely on your horsepower and fuel type.
-
-6 AN: The perfect choice for the vast majority of street performance and muscle car applications. It will safely support up to 600 horsepower on gasoline.
-
-8 AN: A mandatory upgrade for high-horsepower builds, especially those using E85 fuel or forced induction (turbo/supercharger). Choose -8 AN if your engine will make 600-1000 horsepower.
-
-10 AN: Reserved for serious drag racing and competition builds. This size is essential for engines making over 1000 horsepower, especially those running on alcohol fuels like E85 or methanol where maximum fuel volume is critical.

Step 2: Anatomy of a High-Performance SBC Fuel System
A proper system is more than just a hose. Here are the key components you'll need, from back to front:
1. The Fuel Pump & Sending Unit
For EFI conversions, you have two great options: in-tank or inline pumps. An in-tank pump is the quietest and most reliable choice. Many builders adapt factory-style EFI sending units for a clean installation, such as the popular '73-'87 Blazer & GM truck sending units or the specific 1987 Squarebody sending unit.
Another popular solution is an inline fuel pump. These pumps are mounted outside of the fuel tank (typically on the frame rail) and are often easier to install for universal applications since you don't need to drop the tank. Check out our complete collection of high-performance inline fuel pumps to find the right one for your build.
2. The Fuel Filter
This is non-negotiable for EFI. Modern injectors are sensitive to debris and require a filter rated at 10 microns or finer. Our EFI fuel filters are designed to be placed after the fuel pump on the pressure side of the system.
3. The Main Lines (Feed & Return)
You'll run your main AN line from the tank to the engine bay. Secure your lines properly to prevent chafing and vibration damage using our hose mounting hardware and line clamps.
4. The Fuel Pressure Regulator
An EFI system requires a bypass regulator to maintain steady pressure and send excess fuel back to the tank via a return line. You can easily check your pressure by adding a 1/8" NPT gauge port adapter to your regulator or filter.
5. Connecting to Hardlines & Fuel Rails
This is where adapters are essential. You'll need to connect your flexible AN lines to your fuel rails, pump, and existing factory hardlines. Browse our complete collection of AN adapter fittings, including specific hardline to AN adapters, to make the final connections.
